The Comper Personality Test: Which Code Review Type Are You?
Do you like to review your team-members and agent's code with manual care, gifting them comments like it was their birthday? Or do you have 0 trust issues and sip your coffee while the most recent changes get fixed by your agents? Take the Comper personality test to find out.
Since being able to collaboratively write code, code reviews have been the beating heart of Software Engineering. They often were a source of heated debates but also a fruitful ground for mentorship and professional growth. However, with the surge of AI-generated code and a steep increase in code review demand, we observe a shift in how the industry looks at code and the need for it to be reviewed.
Should AI-generated code still be reviewed by humans? Should we leave reviews entirely up to sub-agents? Or should CI/CD be the last hurdle? Should we review the plan instead of the change request? Should we go back to strongly establish human ownership per change request? What happens to domain knowledge and mentorship for Junior Developers if all reviews become automated?
It is interesting, not to say confusing, to witness the bandwidth of different viewpoints amongst Software Engineers. Each of our current clients seem to own a different position on the spectrum of zero intervention vs full control. This fragmentation of opinions is a tell-tale of the current state of Software Engineering - everyone experiments with new ways of working, and at Comper we’re in the midst of it, building tools to support.
